Spooky, Crafty, and Of Course, Local

Oct 6, 2021 | Families, Featured

Cooler temperatures and shorter days mean more than Sunday’s kickoff.

Here in Arizona, fall means it’s time to enjoy a walk outside, finally tap into that pumpkin spice vibe… or check out one of the events or festivals offered by the valley’s family farms.

If it sounds like we’re forgetting something, don’t worry.

Maybe we’re just saving the best for last.

At AZ Milk we LOVE Halloween!

From costumes, spooky decorations, candy, David S. Pumpkins, trick or treaters at the door… and more candy, we’re all about that first holiday in the end-of-year lineup.

But even more than what the kids go nuts over, (did we mention candy?) Halloween’s the perfect chance to put some wind in your creative sails… and mess around with your milk!  From killer crafts and spooky snacks to healthy, tasty recipes to balance out all that sugar consumption, milk and dairy, (not to mention the containers they come in) are no strangers to the party.

This month, we’re chock full of crafts, recipes, and local fall events that your family of tiny ghosts, superheroes, princesses, robots—and even your full-grown Arizona Cardinals fan—will all enjoy!

Getting Crafty

Empty milk jugs and cartons are perfect for Do-It-Yourself Halloween decorations! Provided you’ve emptied them, of course…

We’ve got a couple craft ideas up our sleeve, starting with easy, customizable milk jug candy buckets.

Rinse, clear that label away, take the top off and just add handles! *

And with a little decoration, your candy bucket can be a witch, a pumpkin, a cauldron, or ghost…

*For best results, fill with candy by October 31st.

For an outdoor decoration that won’t rot or collapse, try a milk jug o-lantern!

With the same look and eerie glow of a pumpkin jack-o-lantern, this one can be weighed down with rocks, lit with candles, glow sticks, or a flashlight, and set out to greet those trick-or-treaters with a smile!

From milk carton skeletons to bottle-cap spiders, there’s more than one way to mess with your milk containers!

Spooky Foods and Snacks

If that sweet tooth is still calling out to you, one of these Halloween-themed dairy snacks might just scratch the itch. And with whole ingredients, not to mention vitamin D, calcium and protein, most of these aren’t too shy on the nutrition front!

Chocolate Mummy Milk
Sweet, simple, adorable. Wrap that glass of chocolate milk in gauze and add some eyes!

Pumpkin Chocolate Milk
With overnight oats and chia seeds, this hearty drinkable treat is a sweet, cool, mini meal! If your taste buds are even more adventurous, try dressing it up with pumpkin seeds

Halloween Sugar Cookie Ghosts
Can’t go wrong with classic sugar cookies. Fun to make, decorate, and gobble up!

Dirt and Worms
Chocolate pudding, crushed vanilla cookies, candy corns, gummy worms—can this close cousin of the classic dirt cup get any sweeter?

Chocolate Milk Pumpkin Pancakes
Halloween for breakfast? Sign us up!

They’re as simple as adding pumpkin puree, melted butter, and a few other ingredients to the batter… along with those chocolate chips!

Pairs great with—you guessed it—a glass of locally sourced Arizona milk!

From Fall Harvest to Corn Maze

Fall season is the perfect time to go local.

Whether you’re pulling up your own ripened summer crops—parsnips, carrots, leeks and brussel sprouts, to name a few—or browsing your community’s farmer’s market, the weeks before and after Halloween are perfect for seeing and tasting what’s been growing for the last few months.

In fact, the harvest itself is a time to celebrate. And even here in desert-dry Tempe, many local farms, food, and agricultural producers do just that!

If you live locally, there’s a ton to choose from—even if you just missed the annual, mid-September Garlic Fest at Queen Creek Olive Mill.

Over at Schnepf Farms near Queen Creek, where you might have picked your own vegetables, camped, bought a pie, or even attended a wedding, you can buy tickets to the annual Pumpkin and Chili Party. It’s a bonanza. With delicious food offerings, rides, a petting zoo, and spooky 4 and 10 acre corn mazes, it’s a perfect warm-up for the night of trick-or-treating!

You can also go there on the big night. It’s open from October 1st through the 31st.

And while we’re talking corn mazes, look no further than the Fall Festival at Vertuccio Farms, which is also big on food and drink, fun rides, and open the whole month.

As if those who welcome and celebrate dairy aren’t enough, AZ Milk is glad to be part of a community that celebrates fall with so many offerings.

From Our Candy Bucket to Yours

We love a season that gives so much to celebrate.

Whether you’re sipping one of those chocolate mummy milks, laying out the craft table, or checking out what fall events Arizona farmers have to offer, we hope our suggestions help you bulk up on fun this Halloween!
